Emergency department visits and hospitalization among a longitudinal cohort of marginally housed people

People who are marginally housed are generally assumed to have higher medical needs, translating into increased emergency department visits and hospital admissions. If medical issues could be managed in the community, this could defer potentially unnecessary, traumatic, or wasteful emergency department visits and hospitalizations. The first step in achieving this is to identify the visit patterns of people living in marginalized housing.

We selected a large cohort that has been enrolling since 2008, led by Dr. William Honer and his team. The cohort participants have been followed since the study’s inception and received extensive medical, cognitive, and radiologic testing to investigate long-term patterns. We linked these patients with regional emergency department and hospital databases. This Work in Progress Seminar presents some preliminary results. We will discuss the implications of these findings to provide some direction for future research and policy development to optimize outcomes.
