Pregnancy and Labour Experiences during the COVID-19 Pandemic

In response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), health authorities have increased efforts to protect the general population and slow disease spread. In the greater Vancouver region, maternity service changes included transitioning to virtual prenatal care, restrictions on the number of labour support people who may attend labour and birth, and reduced access to pre- and post-natal education. At a societal level, pandemic restrictions have reduced social contact between pregnant people and their families, friends, and peers.

This seminar will report on results of qualitative research investigating the lived experiences of pregnant people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The seminar will describe how pregnant people adjusted to pandemic restrictions in their daily lives, health care encounters, and social interactions.

This research can support clinicians and decision-makers to identify and implement patient-centred strategies for maternity care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may also explain and provide context for emerging quantitative research that estimates the impact of restrictions on clinical perinatal outcomes.
